Let’s talk pillows. When styling a bedroom, sitting room, or a bench in a hallway, pillows are a design detail that add SO much. You may be thinking, how big of a pillow do I need or where are the best places to purchase from?

First, I like to sit in the space and look around at colors in the space. Notice the colors of any wood furniture, colors of the floor, upholstered furniture, fixture color, paint color on the walls and any colors in accent pieces like artwork etc. The key in choosing pillows is picking colors and textures that pull from the color scheme already in the room. Adding a different textural element is always a plus too!
For example, if you’re not sure what color pillows to choose, and you have an off white couch, black coffee table, and a moody landscape painting with green, beige and mustards colors – pick out pillows that are also neutral in color, pulling from the colors already in the room. A forest green pillow would work with a striped white and khaki pillow. If the pillow has some fringe tassels, or is velvet or linen, these are some ways to bring an additional texture element into the space.
If your couch is dark, I like to add light pillows. If your couch is light, add some darker shades. Contrast is key!
WHERE TO SHOP
Wondering where to shop for affordable/quality pillows? I like Etsy, Home goods, the At Home store, or Amazon. Target has lovely pillows but unfortunately most of them are not down and become lumpy overtime. I prefer down or down alternative inside pillows as you’ll avoid having lumpy pillows in a few months.
Cant find the pillow you’re looking for? Shop for a pillow cover instead. I’ve bought many a pillow cover on Amazon and Etsy and bought the down inserts on Amazon separately. The nice thing about having pillow covers, you can take them off and wash them or with the change of seasons, swap out for something seasonal.
SIZE
When I buy pillow covers, I’ve found its best to buy the covers 2″ smaller than the insert size in order for the pillow to appear more full, and less wrinkly. With a down or down alternative pillow, you want to still be able to chop it. If you cant, use the same size for both.
Layering
When picking out pillows, another thing to think about is layering. Layering to me is all about contrast and size. I like to put colors next too each that have contrast. For example, if you have a dark green chair, and want to add two pillows for a layered look, the first pillow you may want to be a slightly lighter color, so it offsets and is visible against the dark green fabric of the chair, while the second may have some darker elements to contrast with that lighter colored pillow. Here’s an example of what im talking about! Also consider size – buy larger pillows for the back row and smaller pillows for the front that way you can see and enjoy all the textures and colors!
If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I love my neutrals. They’re easy to mix and match and bring a peaceful and calming element to the space. Here’s some lovely neutral pillow covers I’ve bought for my bedroom recently. I love the different textures and colors – all at an affordable price! Everything is linked for you. Hope this helps give you the inspiration you need to create magic with pillows in your space 🙂
