Bathroom Design
I love designing bathrooms because there are so many elements that go into the space, making the creative options endless! Between the lighting fixtures, tile, faucet, shower fixtures, mirror and vanity, there are truly endless opportunities to what you can create!
In our master bathroom, we added reclaimed wood beams going up the slanted ceiling and a skylight above the freestanding tub to draw your eye up and bring in some extra light. I loved creating this space.
Our builder built our vanity and I chose to paint it dark blue because I've been obsessed with blue cabinetry lately! It compliments all my gold fixtures as well as the wood beams and wood look tile so perfectly.
Running half of the bathroom floor, we used Marazzi's wood look tile and it definitely makes a statement in the space. We waited for months for this tile to come in, but it was worth it! The wooden tones from the tile and the beams overhead really helped soften things up and create that warmth that only wood can bring to a bathroom design.
Since our bathroom space is actually pretty small, I opted for an all glass shower walls and door. This helped to create an open feel to the space. The other thing that helped immensely to create the illusion of extra space, was adding the massive 4' circular mirror above the vanity.
To be honest with you, that's my number one go to if I'm ever faced with a small space that I need to open up.
Mirrors do such an amazing job at pulling extra light in a space, making it feel so much larger than it actually is!
How To Create a Beautiful Bathroom Design of Your Own
Okay enough about our bathroom design, I'm here to give you some pointers to create a beautiful bathroom design all for yourself!
My number one inspiration go to is Pinterest! If you're unsure of what mood you want to create in your bathroom, this is a great place to start. Look for a bathroom design you are drawn to most and then create a similar design in your own space!
1. Tile
Select your tile first. Because it covers so much surface area in the space, the tile helps create a base level for the rest of your bathroom design.
Select a Medium/ Small Tile for the Shower Floor
While I definitely see other designers making exceptions to this rule, I always recommend considering safety in the shower.
While bigger tile slabs can be beautiful, I always recommend a medium or small tile square for the shower floor.
The main reason for this is because tile floors do become more slippy when you add water to the equation.
This beautiful shower used a herringbone pattern on the floors and walls and a larger veined marbler for the seat and trim.
I'm definitely drooling over this design!!
Tile Floor Hack for a Small Bathrooms
To create the illusion of more space in your bathroom, use the same tile throughout all the floor space in your bathroom. I love how both of these bathrooms (picture below) did just that. Can you see how this creates the illusion of more floor space in the room? If you have a small bathroom space you're working on, definitely consider doing this to open things up!
Tile On Shower Walls
The sky is the limit when it comes to the tile you put on your shower walls! Check out this rustic shower, below. They used square tiles of the same size on the walls and ceiling. The contrast of tone throughout the tile makes this seemingly simple design interesting.
I've been seeing this trend more and more and love it! It gives the shower so much more depth versus all the wall tile being the same exact color.
2. Wall Paint
Now that you have your tile picked out, its time to decide if you'll be painting the rest of the walls in your bathroom. Again, this is where I go back to Pinterest to look at paint colors and what type of feel they bring to a bathroom design.
Dark colors create a moody feel and go great in small bathrooms. Lighter colors create that fresh airy feel. I recommend browsing Pinterest and start to visualize how you'd like your bathroom to look.
Another thing to consider is functionality. Will you be getting ready in this bathroom every morning and doing your hair and makeup in this space? If that is the case, I recommend going with a lighter neutral color for walls or even simply painting them white.
It might surprise you, but your wall paint does slightly effect the way you see yourself in the mirror. If you're a makeup lover like me, it may not be best to paint your bathroom a bold color as it will effect how your skin tone looks in the mirror.
2. Bathroom Fixtures
Mixing fixtures in both kitchen and bathroom has definitely become a thing within the past couple years. And I'm here for it!
Studio Mcgee definitely does this really well! Check out this bathroom's mixed fixtures. (featured below)
They used a matte black on the faucet fixture and then a silver on both the wall sconces and a silver towel rack on the front of the bathroom vanity.
What are your thoughts??
When it comes to mixing fixtures, you either love it or hate it. But if you're up for the challenge, it is definitely one way to add an extra layer of interest to any bathroom design.
I've linked some affordable bathroom fixtures for you below!

3. Bathroom Vanity
When picking out a bathroom vanity, there are so many things to consider
Size Options
First thing first is make sure you buy something that will fit your space. If your contractor is skilled, you can have him build your vanity! If you don't have that option, its important to take careful measurements.
Measure from the bottom of the floor up. Don't forget to take into consideration any outlets, your sinks and faucet fixtures, mirrors etc! Next, consider how wide you'd like the vanity. They typically range from small medium to large.
Small Vanities (18-36in)
Small vanities are usually perfect for powder rooms or a very small bathrooms where just a toilet and sink are present.
Medium Vanities (30-60in)
Medium size vanities are great for a kids bathroom or shared bathroom in the house.
Large Vanities (60+ in)
Large vanities are typically suited best in a master bath. They usually have more than one sink bowl and offer extra countertop space.
Bathroom Vanity Styles
There are a lot of different styles when it comes to vanities.
Contemporary
Contemporary basically means it's an every changing style which reflects the current trends. The current style has minimalistic lines and neutral colors which matches with practically anything.
Traditional
Traditional style pulls influence from older styles but with a fresh modern take so is typically always a timeless choice. Think paneling and detailed embellishments with classic charm.
Modern
Modern style is known for its minimalistic lines and the idea that less is best. You'll often see this style characterizing Nordic and Scandinavian designs.
Farmhouse
The farmhouse style has become so popular as of late, but rightly so. It brings in an undeniable warmth from natural wood. There is an undeniable welcoming charm that this style brings to any space.
Single or Double Sink
Depending on your space and who will be using the bathroom, it's also important to decide if you'd want a single or double sink.
Double sinks are wonderful for kids bathrooms where multiple kids are sharing the same space. They're also great for master bathrooms, as it allows you to have a him and hers sink along with the extra counter space.
4. Lighting Fixtures
I LOVE picking out lighting fixtures. They truly make a space and add that finishing touch! With that being said, I've created a guide for you to help you pick out the perfect lighting fixtures for your bathroom.
MOOD
I always recommend you go back to your initial inspiration. What type of bathroom were you drawn to? Was it modern farmhouse, traditional design, Scandinavian or Modern? Whatever style your initial inspiration was drawn from, I'd recommend you choose the same for your lighting fixture. This will help solidify your design style within the space.
Wall Sconces
Wall Sconces are beautiful on either side of your mirror if you have the wall space. They help with lighting when doing makeup and also dress up the space. Here are some beautiful and affordable wall sconce options to help inspire you!
5. Mirror
Picking out a mirror is the easiest part! First thing first is to consider your space.
CONSIDER YOUR SPACE
Do you need to add a little hight to your space? Go with tall rectangular mirrors. Need to open your space up by bringing in more light to the space? Go with a large mirror that fills as much wall as possible. Do you have lighting fixtures already in place? Look for something that will fit within that space.
SIZE
Next it's time to think about size. Typically, it's recommend that you pick something out that is either the same width or about 70-80% the width of your vanity.
Keep in mind that you'll want to hang the mirror so that it has at least a foot of space taller and lower than eye level of whoever will be using the mirror. Another thing to keep in mind is you'll want the mirror about 6 inches above the top ledge of the vanity. This gives some space to keep water from splashing on the mirror from the sink.
SHAPE
TRADITIONAL
For a more traditional bathroom, go with a rectangular mirror or oval mirror. These options create a timeless class and symmetry that compliment any traditional style.
ARCHED & CIRCULAR MIRRORS
Arched and circular mirrors have more of a contemporary modern look and have become more common the past couple years. I'm definitely a fan! I added a massive circular mirror to our master bathroom.
NON SYMMETRICAL MIRRORS
For a truly organic look, go for a non -symmetrical mirror. This is one of the easiest ways to bring an interesting focal point to the room.
This post was all about bathroom design. Feel free to reach out with any design questions! I'm always happy to help!
