If you’re like me, you’ve probably reached a point in your life where you’re tired of working hard every day for someone else’s dream. But fear is what keeps most people back from going after what they really want. I’m here to tell you, “You can do it!” The only thing stopping you is YOU.
I have found the best way to overcome fear is look at the facts and then take an educated step forward, despite the being afraid.
Quitting a 9-5 job can be a big decision, and it’s important to consider your reasons for wanting to leave and what you hope to achieve by doing so.
Write a List
- Identify your reasons for wanting to quit. Are you unhappy with your job duties, your boss, or your coworkers? Do you feel like you’re not being paid enough, or that you’re not being challenged enough? Think about your future goals. What do you want to achieve in your career? Will quitting your job help you get closer to those goals, or will it set you back? Understanding your motivations can help you make a more informed decision but more importantly narrow down what you want to CREATE.
Practically speaking, I like to make a list. Write down all the reason you’d want to quit your job.
This will help you find out WHAT it is you’re lacking and from there you can find a solution on HOW you can create that for yourself.
Finances
2. Consider your financial situation. Do you have enough savings to support yourself while you create something else? Are you willing to take on a part-time job or freelance work to supplement your income?
While my husband and I set up our cleaning company, I worked a Nanny Job and my husband delivered for Amazon and also did Insta Cart which is basically shopping for groceries for people. Overall, both of these jobs were super flexible and allowed us to create our own schedule and gave us that extra cushion as we started our cleaning company. Keep in mind, we had about a month or two of savings in our bank account and that was IT.
Here are some ideas for a side hustle
- Offer pet or house sitting services or nannying services.
- Take on a part time job somewhere with flexible hours.
- Offer virtual assistant services to busy professionals or small business owners.
- Rent out a spare room on Airbnb or to someone you know.
- Participate in paid online surveys or focus groups.
- Create and sell digital products like courses or ebooks.
- Become a delivery driver for services like Uber Eats or DoorDash.
- Offer lawn care or gardening services.
- Create and sell handmade crafts or products on social media or at local markets.
I hope these ideas ultimately help give you some inspiration for what could bring you in some extra cash while you start something new!
If you’ve already have a few months of savings, well then you’re a few steps ahead of the rest of us. It may be possible that don’t need to get a side hustle right away. But this is totally up to you! I am not giving financial advice just here to help you consider all your options and succeed!
Have a plan
3. Have a plan in place. Now that you’ve considered what exactly is missing in your life as well as your financial situation, its finally time to come up with a plan. If you do decide to quit your job, make sure you have a plan in place for what you’ll do next. This might involve updating your resume, networking with contacts in your industry, or taking classes to learn new skills.
Ultimately, the decision to quit your 9-5 job is a personal one, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It’s important to weigh your options carefully and make the decision that’s best for you!
